Consumer utility that improved Internet Explorer and Windows Internet performance and was used by millions of people.
THE CHALLENGE :
THE CHALLENGE :
THE CHALLENGE :
Internet Explorer had a serious performance degradation problem. After extended use, the browser became noticeably slower even after users cleared their cache, history, and cookies. The root cause was a growing index file (index.dat) that was never properly cleaned. Microsoft did not fix the issue despite it being reported through official channels, and later protected the file so it could not be deleted through normal means.
APPROACH & KEY DECISIONS :
APPROACH & KEY DECISIONS :
APPROACH & KEY DECISIONS :
I treated this as both a technical problem and a product opportunity. Instead of just releasing a rough utility, I focused on making a polished, reliable tool that ordinary users could trust.
Key decisions included:
First proving the root cause and creating a simple fix (delete the index file on reboot)
Evolving it into a full consumer product with a clean interface and additional useful features
Finding a way to reset the index file without requiring a Windows restart
Continuously listening to user feedback and adding high-value capabilities (especially better cookie management)
Raising the bar faster than larger competitors who began copying the core idea
SOLUTION & IMPLEMENTATION :
SOLUTION & IMPLEMENTATION :
SOLUTION & IMPLEMENTATION :
I designed and built TweakIE as a polished Windows utility that gave users one-click control over Internet Explorer performance and related data. The product:
Cleaned the problematic index file (eventually without requiring a reboot)
Allowed users to relocate the browser cache
Provided clear, human-readable cookie management so people could see and selectively remove cookies by site
Included automatic updates in later versions
Was distributed widely through download sites with a simple paid licensing model
I handled the full product lifecycle early on (development, testing, distribution, customer feedback, and ongoing improvement) before later expanding the team under BlooGoo.
RESULTS & IMPACT :
RESULTS & IMPACT :
RESULTS & IMPACT :
Grew from a free utility into a commercial product priced at $20
Reached millions of downloads
Received coverage in newspapers, magazines, and television
Forced larger companies (including Symantec) to add similar features to their products
Demonstrated that a focused, user-driven product could compete with much larger players by moving faster and listening more closely

WHAT I LEARNED :
Users will tell you exactly what they need if you pay attention. The biggest advantage came from staying close to real problems, shipping improvements quickly, and consistently raising the quality bar so that competitors were always reacting to what I had already released.
