Standards-driven mobile inspection system that made incorrect inspections nearly impossible.

Fire inspectors were still performing inspections using paper or rigid digital forms that made it easy to misapply regulations. This led to errors, re-inspections, and friction between businesses and municipalities. The client wanted a mobile solution, but at the time almost no one was building serious mobile inspection tools tied directly to live regulatory standards.

Rather than building a traditional form-based application, I focused on making it structurally difficult for an inspector to make a mistake.
Key decisions included:
Using the NFPA’s official XML standards as the living source of truth for the interface
Designing the application so the entire inspection UI was generated dynamically from those standards
Automatically detecting and incorporating new standards releases
Eliminating free-text entry wherever possible so inspectors selected from valid options only
Building a strong backend for reporting, history, and municipal workflows
Directing a distributed team (including a mobile specialist overseas) while staying closely involved in architecture and product decisions

I owned the overall direction of the project and led a small team that included internal engineers, a mobile contractor, and a designer. The system:
Dynamically built the inspection interface from NFPA XML standards
Prevented invalid or incorrect regulatory selections by design
Automatically checked for standards updates and incorporated them
Uploaded completed inspections and generated properly formatted municipal reports
Provided administrators with search, historical records, and reporting tools
We ran the project in short weekly iterations so the client could see progress continuously and we could refine the experience based on real inspector feedback.

The highest-quality systems often come from removing the possibility of error rather than trying to train people not to make mistakes. By making the standards themselves drive the interface, we turned a complex compliance problem into a much simpler guided experience. Leading both the product direction and the technical architecture was essential to keeping that principle intact throughout delivery.
