AIRPORT PARKING AUTOMATION SYSTEM
Founder & Project Lead · BlooGoo
Real-time license plate recognition and fully automated parking system.
THE CHALLENGE :
THE CHALLENGE :
THE CHALLENGE :
The existing airport parking system was highly manual and error-prone. Attendants watched low-quality camera feeds, typed license plate numbers, manually recorded entry times, calculated fees by hand, and processed payments on a separate device. The client initially asked only for better cameras and basic automation of time calculation. As the owner of the firm, I engaged directly with the client to redefine the scope toward a much more ambitious and valuable solution.
APPROACH & KEY DECISIONS :
APPROACH & KEY DECISIONS :
APPROACH & KEY DECISIONS :
I challenged the assumption that attendants needed to read license plates at all. Rather than delivering a better version of the existing manual process, I pushed the engagement toward full automation.
Key decisions included:
Reframing the project from incremental improvement to end-to-end automation
Selecting and licensing real-time OCR technology
Combining visual and infrared cameras to handle difficult real-world conditions
Redefining accuracy as consistent recognition rather than perfect character matching
Designing for both full automation and clean human override
Directing a small team while remaining hands-on in the core architecture and complex implementation
SOLUTION & IMPLEMENTATION :
SOLUTION & IMPLEMENTATION :
SOLUTION & IMPLEMENTATION :
I owned the overall solution direction, client communication, and delivery while leading a small engineering team. The system included:
Real-time license plate recognition
Hardware integration with cameras, magnetic loops, and gates
Automatic fee calculation and payment processing
Touchscreen attendant interfaces with manual overrides
Fully automated exit lanes for frequent parkers (under 3 seconds)
Web-based administration and reporting
I stayed closely involved in the highest-risk technical areas while ensuring the team executed cleanly against a clear architectural direction.
RESULTS & IMPACT :
RESULTS & IMPACT :
RESULTS & IMPACT :
Achieved >98% operational accuracy
Greatly reduced manual errors and attendant workload
Enabled fully automated entry and exit experiences
Delivered search and reporting capabilities the client previously lacked
Produced one of the early production implementations of this type of automated parking system in the U.S.
WHAT I LEARNED :
WHAT I LEARNED :
WHAT I LEARNED :
The highest-leverage work often happens before any code is written; in how the problem is framed with the client. By pushing past the initial request and redefining success around full automation, we delivered far more value than a safer, incremental approach would have allowed. Leading both the client conversation and the technical execution was essential to making that shift possible.
